You'll need to restart the data inputs each time you launch the program. Choose "Start Demo Receiver" from the AIS menu for the demo Internet feed, or open the preferences, choose the Data Sources tab, and click on "Open port" for the serial AIS receiver or GPS receiver. The checkboxes don't do anything yet. For KML output, the checkbox does work, but you'll need to uncheck it and check it each time you start the program.
