You could try gun or metal bluing. You can buy this stuff at a gun
shop. It wouldn't look as dark but if the light areas are small enough
the eye can be fooled into it looking darker next to the original dark
surface.
Small nicks in the metal can be darkened with a permanent marker pen. It
will fade in the sun but is very easy to reapply. Subsequent
applications tend to stay dark.
Another trick you could try is to mask off the edge of the toe rail and
wipe a thin coat of paint on it with a rag. The wiping action will blend
the new paint into the old and add that slightly worn effect. If you
like the effect, do the whole rail.
By the way the colour in anodizing is merely food dye. The process for
bonding it to the metal is anything but edible!
