The torrential rain kept the spectators away :-). I eventually got the
engine started by taking it apart and rewinding the cord by hand.

If you are going to start the engine out of water, then at least dip the
leg in the water BEFORE you pull the starter cord. This will wet and
lubricate the impeller to minimize wear. There is a very fine rib of
rubber on the edge of the impeller that seals it to the water pump case.
Wear out this rib and you've worn out the impeller.
40 feet from the dock huh? Could the spectator crowd hear you from the
dock?
