This is an interesting exercise. Actually no different than reefing the
main by raising the boom. Not recommended but then who ever discovered
anything new by following the rules!
It seems to me that a smaller main with a higher boom would upset the
balance of effort around the centre of resistance. With proportionally
more drive from the jib, the hull would have a greater tendency to round
up. Having said that, a San Juan is probably one of the better boats
that can sail on the jib alone, but it requires speed to maintain
direction. The higher you point into the wind the more pronounced the
imbalance will affect the boat.
