I spent 20 years as a research engineer for Kenworth and Peterbilt truck
companies(PACCAR Inc). FYI, within the state side heavy duty trucking
industry what you are calling an "idler" is commonly called a "Walking Bar."
This term might make the function clearer to some people. I can't think of
a better way of expressing its function than what you did in the attached
e-mail. The bottom line is that the walking bar helps maintain a more even,
or constant, load on each of the springs as the vehicle (each wheel) goes
over a bump.
