I learned to sail during the ten years I spent on my SJ23, and I wish she had taught me how to reef the main a little better.  I moved "up" to a MacGregor 26 a couple of years ago, and I'm getting close to wearing out the reef points on her main.  I'd say that even if you don't have to do it very often, you ought to get familiar with the SJ23's reefing system.

Makes me wonder why the main would have two sets of reef points.....But I still want to set it in case I sail to Ocracoke or such and need to be prepared.
How's your cunningham rigged?

The main is relatively small on a San Juan 23, so reefing is not a problem with me....make sure cunningham, outhaul, and backstay are all tensioned, and spill the wind (I use the sheet, many use the traveler)
