I used my old Jeep GC with a 318 to tow my boat and trailer from south 
of Seattle back to Edmonton (over 1000 miles over the Rockies) when I 
bought her.  No problems.

I then had a 1988 Ford half ton van for a short period and also had no 
problems although I did not retreive her using this vehicle on the very 
steep launch ramp I use by my cabin.

I now have a Ddoge Durango with a 4.7 litre V8.  Great vehicle although 
highway mileage at 21 mpg is not he best.

I think my ideal would be something like a new Murano.  Great towing, 
4wd and mileage combination.

Whatever you use, trailer balance and condition are key as well as 
vehicle condition.  If you only towing in relatively flat terrain, the 
manufacturer towing capacity should be a good guide.  Mountain terrain, 
you should either change gear ratios and cooling capacity or upgrade to 
higher capacity.
