Results of majordomo poll

I think the results of the poll are rather
conclusive, with 22 skippers indicating they like the new format and any
proliferation of responses can be handled with their delete key. There were
three who want to return to the former format. And there have been 7 requests to
unsubscribe, some dependent on whether we return to the old format.

I have complied with the request of the seven to
unsubscribe them. However I am told Hal Mueller our majordomo webmaster is on
his honeymoon. Because of this he has not completed the final step to
unsubscribe them. Their request is hung up on his computer until he gets back.

I have received some constructive suggestions on
how we might modify the majordomo list format and Hal will look at these and
decide whether any of them are feasible. Thank you for your feedback and
support. Sorry to see some of you go but I understand some may be using work
computers or in other situations that make it difficult when responses pile up.
I hope we can solve the problem for you while at the same time keep the message
board active. It has been pretty dead for some time before we tried this
modification. The suggestions are attached as saved e-mail

I like the boat information but not the administrative information. We are
all so used to just hitting the reply button that it is easy to
inadvertently spam the distribution list. In addition to the SJ23 list, my
job entails HEAVY email usage within my company and as a subscriber to lists
related to my profession. If the volume of information not pertinent to my
boat and sailing continues to grow, I will be forced to unsubscribe.

I think the approach used to solicit this feedback is a good compromise.
Create canned text within the message with more explicit instructions:

	A. Use REPLY to broadcast your comments to the list membership.
	B. Use this link to reply to the original sender.
	C. Use this link to contact the list administrator.

If I want to participate in the dialogue, I will use option A. If I want to
say "Thanks!", I will use option B. If I want to unsubscribe (not an option
that I want to pursue!) or have a question about the mechanics of the list,
I will use option C. Sometimes I (and others) will select the wrong option
-- I can live with that. Not a perfect solution, but perhaps a step.

I do applaud and encourage your efforts to keep the SJ23 list vibrant. You
are doing a great job in a less than perfect world!

Robert Allen

I love the new format, and it is great to be able to see the conversations
going on between the members. Sorry to loose those six people, anyone can
use the delete icon if they don't want to read the messages. One suggestion
is to encourage everyone to use the subject line, and that way if there is
an ongoing conversation about tiller tamers, and you are not interested,
just delete it.

Another point to note:

I notice that people are just banging out emails to respond to someone,
WITHOUT REGARD TO THE TITLE OF THE EMAIL. Already I have seen several
responses that have NOTHING to do with the title. Very confusing to say
the least.

Never mind the number of emails, The ones that are distributed don't
mean what they say. No wonder people what to unsubscribe.
