My original boards were split.  They were made of teak plywood and in bad
shape.  I replaced then with a one-piece board I made from high density poly
that stores under either of the cabin cushions when underway.  The poly is
white and impervious to weathering.  Kitchen cutting boards are made out of
the same poly material.  We just slide the hatch board up under the cushions
in the v-berth and it stays put very well.
