Re: Keel Blisters

We kept the Boat in Poulsbo.  Less access from our home in the Tri-Cities, but much better sailing! Will let you know how the blister repair works out.

Mike and Kathy
I do remember you , now that you have jogged my memory. Where is your boat now? You did have it on this side of the mountains at one time. Good luck with the blisters.

Gene - Thanks!  I will follow your advice depending on if I see blisters when I take the boat out in June. I don't know if you remember us or not.  We bought the boat at the '86 boat show from you and picked it up in May of that year in Everett. It has been a lot of fun since!

Mike, and Kathy,
To do a lasting repair job on your keel, you need to take the gel coat off. I have used a grinder with 12 grit paper. Then use the Interlux system to epoxy the keel. It takes two coats of primer and thee coats of finish coat. You can put on two coats a day, if you start early. This is the only way I know of to cure blisters. If you are not willing to do this, keep repairing the ones that show up every year.

I have a San Juan 23 which I bought new in '86 and have kept at Poulsbo, WA in the water.  Greatest investment  I ever made!  The last few times I have  taken it out to paint the bottom, there have been a few small blisters on the keel, which I have repaired individually.

This summer I am planning to sand the keel down to the gelcoat and put on a new barrier coat.

Anybody had similar problems? Any ideas?
