RE: newbie daves got another question

Dave,

I just did my centerboard this spring. I ended up putting the attach point where it was on the old board, and it doesn't go up all the way now! It was an unexpected project, and ended up taking longer than I had hoped. I went with it like it is, and figured I would spend some time on it next haul out. Haven't figured out if it is the cable length or placement of the loop on the back edge. (side note: make sure the leading edge is rounded, not pointed. And the trailing edge is tapered to a flat edge about 1/8".)

I guess after all that, my advice is to make sure it all works properly before you start welding or drilling. I drilled and tapped two holes for mine. It only has to hold 70lbs, so I don't think welding is necessary. Whatever is easer for you to get done. I also went with regular steel, coated it with West epoxy with graphite additive, then put some bottom paint on for good measure. If I ever get off my butt, I will have all the pictures I took posted to the website.

Good luck,

Eric

Subject: newbie daves got another question

Hey all - question - Ive been all over Bob Schimmels Tech Tips, and one
minor detail I havnt seem to be able to find, is the exact location of
the centerboard hoist cable. My boat came with a new stainless steel
centerboard, and the cable has not been attached. When the board is
down, can you see point where the cable is attached? Guy at marina
suggested best way to do this is to weld a loop on edge of CB (as
opposed to drilling hole). Anyone with experience on this?

THanks in advance
